About LCARW
LCARW was federated with the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW) and the National Federation of Republican Women in 1993 with 50 active women. Our first officers were Miriam Burton-President; Darlene Hermann-VP Programs; Dorothy Lynch-VP Ways and Means; Sandi McMurry-Treasurer; and Nancy Oughton-Secretary. The first four fundraisers were manning a booth at the Shell Houston Open in The Woodlands. When Shell wanted to specify where the money should be donated, the club decided to have a Style Show with elected officials modeling with their spouses. A silent auction was added later which greatly increased profits. In 1997, a Political Action Committee (PAC) account was established.
In 1993, six members attended the TFRW Convention and received the TFRW John Goodwin Tower Award of Excellence for the club. LCARW also received the NFRW Diamond Award for Outstanding Achievement. LCARW has received the same two awards every two years since 1993! Other awards include The Caring for America Award for outstanding community service; Readers Become Leaders , Barbara Bush Literacy; Top Five Outstanding Teacher Award for Brenda Beaven who established the “Honor Flight” for World War II Veterans to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.; TFRW Best Newsletter Award, Membership Award; 10 Outstanding Women winners Nancy Oughton, Miriam Burton and Judy Parada, and Jeri Kay Renfroe was Texas Page for the 2005 NFRW Convention.
Our Americanism Committee sponsors the “My American Hero” Essay Contest of hundreds of third grade students from Willis ISD and 5th graders from Montgomery ISD. The club also supports the two school districts by awarding scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Our Caring for America Committee has donated padded helmets and care packages to our troops, food to the food bank, heart defibrillators to school districts, clothing to the Rainbow Room, Christmas gifts and furnishings for seniors at the Friendship Center, pocket Constitutions to students, and honored Veterans at senior centers.
Our members are very active as Precinct Chairs, working for Republican candidates, donating $10,000+ to candidates through our PAC funds, walking districts for candidates, working phone banks, volunteering at Montgomery County GOP Headquarters, and assisting with many other party events.
